Explaining our math thinking

November 8, 2019

Math: We are digging deep into addition and subtraction. The kids are discovering related math facts and the connection between adding and subtracting. If you have any questions about the strategies please do not hesitate to contact me. 
Literacy: We are improving so much in spelling!!!! We are working on our long vowel sounds (when the letter says it's name) and doing a lot of reading. 
Social Studies: Social Studies this month is about the origin and history of folktales. We have explored French Cinderella, Irish Billy Begs, and Dutch Tom Thumb. 
Core Virtue: For our Core Virtue writing this month we are building skills to write some short plays about Gratitude. 

Classroom News: 
We started Me in a Bag with our first share from Tophlynn. Each week I will send our bag home with a student, and they will fill the bag with items that are special to them and that they can share with the class. 
October 25, 2019

Math:  We’re starting on with Ch4 and subtraction strategies

Literacy:  We learned about ‘bridge e’ a.k.a. Silent e, or Magic e

Grammer: We worked on recognizing nouns and verbs within sentences 

Writing:  The students are really doing a fantastic job improving their writing skills. We are beginning to practice the writing process which includes mapping your thinking, a sloppy copy, and finished results with our Core Virtue Writing. 

Science/Social Studies: We finished our unit on Egypt Civilization with our study of King Tutankhamun. 



Week of October 18

Math:  We’re continuing on with Ch3 and addition strategies

Literacy:  

Grammer: We worked on recognizing nouns and verbs within sentences 

Writing:  The students are really doing a fantastic job improving their writing skills. We are beginning to practice the writing process which includes mapping your thinking, a sloppy copy, and finished results. 

Science/Social Studies: Exploring Egypt Civilization  


Week of September 6, 2019

Math: This week we are finishing our first unit on addition. Our end of unit test will be early next week.   

Literacy: Our Reading Street curriculum is underway this week we are studying short o and the -s plurals. 

Grammer: We are continuing work on sentence structure. That includes capitals and ending punctuation, and now nouns. 

Writing: We did more sentence writing practice. 

Science/Social Studies: We have started our Science unit about the Human Body

STEM: Today was our first STEM project in Mrs. Wellman’s class. We focused on learning how to work together and that making mistakes is a BIG part of learning and growing our brain. 



week of August 30, 2019

Math: This week we are fully immersed into our  math curriculum called Go Math. We are starting off with a review of addition. What I love about this curriculum is the hands on aspect as you will see in the home’fun’ in the red folders.  

Literacy: Our Reading Street curriculum is underway this week along with our diagnostic MAP and Dibels. Thanks to this data we are able to accurately place students in their first groups of the year. Students will be moving around in their reading groups as they progress. Contact your student’s teacher with any questions. 

Grammer: We have started learning about sentence structure. That includes capitals and ending punctuation. 

Writing: We did some sentence writing. 

Science/Social Studies: We are concluding our unit on geography.

Math: We finished our unit on comparing and measurement.

Reading/Writing: We are working on writing sentences using sight words and new vocabulary as well as following sentence structure. We are also continuing shared writing during Discovery Time. Letter Y and sight word work.

Science/Social Studies: We concluded our unit on taking care of the earth with our Community Service Day.

We also learned that Earth Day is everyday!!!!

April 19, 2019 Math: We started our unit on comparing, measurement, and data.  

Students working on developing an understanding of measurement and data. Working in small groups gives them a chance to practice their collaboration skills as well as graphing skills.

Reading/Writing: We are working on writing sentences using sight words and new vocabulary as well as following sentence structure. We are also continuing shared writing during Discovery Time. Letter Z and sight word work.

Science/Social Studies: We started our unit on taking care of the earth.

Math: We finished our unit on money with our Kindergarten Math Market.  


Reading/Writing: We are looking deeper into words, their meaning and connection to each other with word inquiry work. It has also prompted some to read the base words we are using in our work. Yay! Here is the email I had sent home earlier this week about this word inquiry work and the research behind it.

Science/Social Studies: We started our unit on Asia: Japan and China.

Core Rhymes/Stories/Poem: There was an Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe, I Do Not Mind You Winter Wind

Birthday celebration with 2nd grade. Second Grade came to read us a Dr. Seuss book and then we worked on a craft with our 2nd grade buddies. We even had one of the Kindergarteners as a reader!!! Thanks Mesa!

February 22, 2019 Math: We are continuing our unit on money. We have focused on how to tell the coins apart and understand their value.

Reading/Writing: We are looking deeper into words, their meaning and connection to each other with word inquiry work. We are also continuing shared writing during Discovery Time.

Science/Social Studies: We started our unit on American Symbols with a focus on the Statue of Liberty, American Flag, the Liberty Bell, and bald eagles.

Core Rhymes/Stories/Poem: There was an Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe


Kindergarten Opportunity: We have openings to visit with the rabbits coming up. Both classes are welcome to sign up to take the rabbits. Here is the Rabbit Visitation Schedule


We were able to meet with our 8th grade buddies as they presented the books written by the 8th graders based off of kindergarten ideas for character, setting and plot. Each student got their own copy of the book they helped create! THANK YOU 8th GRADE!

Math: We are continuing our unit on money. We are focusing on how to tell the coins apart and understand their value.

Reading/Writing: Review of past units, adjectives,and shared writing during Discovery Time.

Science/Social Studies: We concluded our unit on Presidents with a focus on George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt.

Core Rhymes/Stories/Poem: Roses are Red, Snow White


We had a great time on our trip to the Arvada Arts Center. After the play we learned how Eric Carle illustrates his stories and made our own Hungry Caterpillar.

: We have started learning about money and how to tell the coins apart Reading/Writing: We finished Unit 3! We have started beginning blends. We also continue to practice spelling sight words and using them in sentences in addition to shared writing during Discovery Time.

Math: We have started focusing on counting and skip counting to 100 as well as number recognition up to 25

Reading/Writing: We have just started introducing beginning blends. We did sight word work, letter F, and continued shared writing during Discovery Time.

Science/Social Studies: We finished our unit about weather and how to read a thermometer.

Math: Working on subtraction sentences

Reading/Writing: We continue to engage students in reading research followed by rich conversations. Unit 2 Week 6: Continue letter “i” and sight word work.

Science/Social Studies: Africa! We made African jewelry, learned a dance, and learned about the animals and culture of three African countries; Kenya, Uganda, and Democratic Republic of the Congo.

November 16, 2018 Math:
We continued to create story problems using drawings and addition sentences. We have added to this by having students explain their math strategy to their peers.

Reading/Writing: We continue to engage students in reading research followed by rich conversations. Letter of the week: C

Science/Social Studies: We have participated in activities and crafts in which we share what we are thankful for in our lives.

Makerspace Project:

These structures were the culmination of our project-based learning about Native American style homes. Students used (mostly) things collected from fallen trees. We supplied a little twine and sheets. In groups they were tasked with working together to create a real structure which built on the models we made two weeks earlier.

Something New

Flexible Seating:  We are introducing flexible seating in our classrooms. This is day one and the kids are doing great!! We would like to ask for your support to get some supplies to make it a great working environment.



 November 9, 2018

Math: We built addition sentences to connect to the story problems created by students.

Reading/Writing: We read Animal Babies in Grasslands and built on writing work with our new sight words by creating sentences and illustrations.

Science/Social Studies: Completed our unit on Native Americans with a celebration of the culture and games of America’s Natives.

Core Rhymes/Stories/Poem: The Wolf and the Seven Kids

 The link below is to a fun math practice as the kids prepare for their MAP testing in the winter. Just 30 minutes a week has proved to increase math skills and computer skills. Each unit is only about 10 minutes long.
