Dear Parents,

We appreciate the positive feedback we have both gotten back from some of you. It is very appreciated!

Zoom Lessons- We will be teaching math and literacy on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Math will be from 9:00-9:25. We will do a quick brain break to get kids up out of their seats then we will continue with a literacy lesson right after from 9:30-10:00. Please remember that the zoom sessions are optional and will be recorded/posted to view later.

Small Group Literacy Zoom- Please let us know if you would like your child to continue meeting with us for a small group literacy lesson via Zoom. Please email us with days/times (morning vs. afternoon) that best fit into your schedule. We will try to accomodate the best we can.

Thank you to everyone who picked up the packets at the Fire Station!

Hello,

We have received some feedback from parents and we are going to simplify the amount of zoom sessions and decrease the amount of assignments for the students starting tomorrow. We care a lot about our students learning but we also want this to be manageable for our families. We are learning and figuring this out as we go and please remember that we are trying our best!

Below are the adjustments we are making:

Math- Students should complete the entire packet (in-class and homework pages) but please just upload the homework pages to Google Classroom.

Literacy- For the rest of this week, complete the “Must-Do’s” for each day. The “Choice Activities” are optional. Moving forward, we will list out the pages we would like children to complete each day under the “Literacy Work” topic in Google Classroom.

Social Studies- Please have your child listen to the video. The Google Form Activity with comprehension questions will be optional from now on.

Zoom Sessions- Moving forward, we will have one zoom session per day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9:00 AM. There will not be any general education zoom lessons tomorrow- only their zoom lessons for specials. For small group literacy, we will contact individual families to see if you would like to schedule a time with us.

Tomorrow is the last day to pick up the student packets from Fire Station #1 (located by the Evergreen Lake). Thank you to everyone who has picked them up! The remainder of the packets will be mailed out tomorrow. Please make sure your address is up to date in Infinite Campus.

If you haven’t yet, we suggest downloading the Google Classroom app on your phone. This should make uploading documents easier.

Hello,

Day 4 of virtual learning is in the books! Thank you for helping your children get signed onto zoom for their lessons. If your child wasn’t able to make it to the live lesson, they will soon be able to watch the recorded version. It is taking some time to download the files to Google Classroom and we appreciate your patience! You will need to fast forward through the blue small group reading lesson.

The packets of workbook pages for literacy and math for the remainder of the year (just in case) are located at Fire Station #1. Each packet has the name of the student written on the front. If you are wondering why the packets are at the fire station it’s because Mrs. Grose is a volunteer firefighter as well. She is a super human! It’s very important that you bring any unused pages back to school if we do return this year. Also, do not allow your child to work ahead. The packets will be in crates outside of Fire Station # 1 (by the Evergreen Lake) between 8:00 a.m. and noon. Please pick them up either tomorrow or Wednesday morning. If you are not able to pick up the packet, we will mail the rest of the packets out to your homes.

Hello!

We hope everyone was able to rest and recharge a bit over spring break! While we continue with remote learning, Mondays will now be a workday for students and teachers. Lessons will resume Tuesdays-Fridays.

We will be teaching whole group math and literacy using Zoom videos and we are hopeful that a majority of the students will be able to make it on a computer during those scheduled times. The links for Zoom sessions can be found on Google Classroom under the “Zoom Meetings” Topic. We understand that this will not always be possible so we will be recording and posting the lessons to Google Classroom so they can be viewed later. We have also included an optional Zoom session on Monday for the kids to eat lunch together and socialize with each other. We appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility as we know our new reality has been a huge adjustment for everyone. We would also like to continue meeting with small groups for differentiated reading practice. We will be using articles from ReadWorks during that time. Below are the materials your child will need to have with them during whole group lessons:

Math-Workbook page and pencil

Literacy- Reading Street Textbook, something to write on and something to write with (mini whiteboard and marker, pencil and paper, mini chalkboard and chalk, etc.)

Attached to this email you will see our new “Second Grade Remote Learning Schedule”. At the bottom of our teaching schedule you will see a table titled “Second Grade Daily Subject Checklist.” The purpose of this checklist is to help you and your child keep track of the assignments they are required to complete each day. Some subjects will be self-guided and all assignments will be posted on Google Classroom daily. All specials will take place on Thursdays and they may be a Zoom lesson and sometimes the assignments will be self-guided. Make sure to check in with the specials teacher to see what the activity is for the day.

In addition to our current online platforms, we are adding Spellingcity.com as an additional assignment. Your childs’ username will be their email and password will be rmae1234.

After receiving some feedback, we will be posting assignments for the next day the night before at 6:00 P.M.. The purpose is to help you and your child plan ahead for the following day.

We will be assembling packets of workbook pages for the remainder of the year. Currently, the plan is to continue remote learning through April 17th. It is very important that you bring any unused pages back to school if we do return to teaching in-person. Also, do not allow your child to work ahead. The packets are going to be in crates outside of Fire Station # 1 (by the Evergreen Lake) between 8:00 a.m. and noon. If you are able to pick them up between tomorrow and this Thursday afternoon, that would be very helpful. If not, we will mail the rest of the packets out to your homes.

Hello Everyone!

Please See the Important Information Below:

-Please make sure to sign up for Seesaw before we start class again on March 23rd. We will try to post some fun (optional) activities on there for kids to do over spring break.

-R.M.A.E. will not resume in-person classes through April 17th.

-Spring Break is March 20th to March 27th. We will resume Virtual Learning on Monday, March 30th.

Fun Optional Activities For Spring Break:

-Get Outside: hikes/walks around the neighborhood, bike rides, bird/wildlife watching (record/draw what you see), make a homemade sundial to track sun’s movement, have a picnic, use the sun to make a solar oven to cook some food outside (pizza box, saran wrap, and aluminum foil)

-House Bound Zoo: Gather up all of your kids’ stuffed animals and create a make-believe zoo.

-At Home Gymnasium: put tape on the floor and use as a pretend balance beam, play “Hot Lava” by putting cushions on the floor

-Quiet Time: read with a flashlight (turn big lights off), create a home theatre (popcorn, stuffies, lights off), painting projects, play/build with Play-Doh or Legos

-Search Google or Pinterest for simple, at-home S.T.E.M. activities

Week of 3/13/2020

Dear Parents,

Today we organized and sent home 2 weeks worth of materials to begin remote learning. As of now, R.M.A.E. is closed March 16th- March 27th. Keep in mind that this is a fluid situation. None of us know how long this virus will remain active or how long we will be continuing remote learning. It could be weeks or months.

The following items were sent home in backpacks today to support learning:

Reading Folder with 2 weeks of stories and activities
Reading Street Textbooks
Math Folder with the remainder of Chapter 9: Length in Metric Units, Chapter 10: Data, and rulers for students who requested them
Pioneer Play Scripts to be practiced at home
Friday Folders with report cards
Spiral Notebook

Please do not have students work on any of these materials until Tuesday after you receive additional information. On Monday we will email you lesson plans with specific details and logistics. Make sure to save and return all materials when school is back in session. As always, feel free to reach out by email with any questions.

One last additional note, there was a report of a student stating that their sibling tested positive for the virus. It has been confirmed by the parent that the statement is false.

In the News:


-The Young Writers Conference is coming up on April 16th. All second graders are going to write their own tall tale this year for it. We completed the planning process at school. Children will be required to write their rough draft at home as well as complete their final copy with illustrations. All of the directions for this project will be sent home on Monday, March 9th and due back on Monday, April 13th. That will give children 5 weeks (including spring break) to complete the project. This will be in place of their written reading log homework for those weeks.
   
Week 1 (March 9-13th): Write Rough Draft
Week 2 (March 16th-19th): Finalize Rough Draft and Edit with Adult
Week 3 (March 23rd-March 28th): Spring Break (Optional Work Time)
Week 4 (March 30th- April 3rd): Type or Write Final Draft in Books
Week 5 (April 6th- April 10th): Illustrate Final Copy

-Last week, flyers were sent home in Friday Folders. It contained the directions for signing up for the Young Writers’ Conference if your child wanted to. 

Academics:

Math: We completed Chapter 8: Length in Customary Units and began Chapter 9: Length in Metric Units.

Literacy: We read a nonfiction story called, “Firefighters!” We practiced identifying the main idea of a text and the suffixes (-ful, -ly, or, and er).

Grammar/Writing: We learned about pronouns and began the planning process for the childrens’ Tall Tale stories.

C.K. Sayings/Phrases: “Turn over a new leaf.”

Social Studies: We have continued to learn about immigration including topics such as the potato blight in Ireland, the “Gold Mountain” that pulled many Chinese immigrants here, and the many reasons why the United States is known as the “land of opportunity.” We have also been practicing and learning songs for our Patriotic Program.

S.T.E.M. The challenge this week was to build a basket strong enough to hold objects out of only one paper plate and tape

Academics:

Math: We continued practicing measuring objects with inches, feet, and yards for Chapter 8: Length in Customary Units.

Literacy: We read a narrative nonfiction story called, “Helen Keller and the Big Storm” and other nonfiction stories about twisters and wind. Our comprehension skill of the week was fact vs. opinion and the phonics skill was the sound for ui, ew, ue, and oo.

Writing: We continued learning and practicing lower case letters in cursive. For grammar we learned about adverbs.

Core Knowledge Sayings: “Get up on the wrong side of the bed” and “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

Social Studies: After our conclusion of Domain 8: The Civil War, we began learning about the many push and pull factors that brought immigrants to the United States in the past and still today.

Core Virtues: The children watched a couple of short videos about honesty and heard stories about times when people were honest in tough situations. Then they had a chance to share about times when they were honest, why it’s important to be honest, and how people will view you if you aren’t honest during a small group dice game. Then they wrote about honesty in their journals.

S.T.E.M. The challenge this week was to be a survivor on a “deserted island!”! In order to survive the kids had to build a shelter for their team out of newspaper and tape. The most difficult part was that they were not allowed to talk while they built their structure.

-Thanks again to everyone who donated items or their time to help out with Pioneer Day! We felt like the day went well and the kids had a great time!

Literacy: We read a narrative poem called, “I Like Where I am.” We talked about our own connections to the poem by discussing big changes that we’ve had to adjust to. We focused on the oy/oi sound and theme/plot for the comprehension skill.

Writing: We continued to practice cursive and learned about adverbs.

Social Studies: We learned more about the Civil War and important people of that time including Robert E. Lee, Clara Barton, and Ulysses S. Grant. We also learned about the Emancipation Proclamation.

S.T.E.M.: This week the challenge was to build the longest paper chain using only one large piece of paper per group.

Core Knowledge Stories: During Library this week, the children heard the story, “How the Camel Got it’s Hump.”

In the News:

-Pioneer Day will be next Wednesday, February 19th. We apologize for the confusion about the date. We are hopeful that many of you can still make it!

Events/Academics:

-It has been a busy week in second grade!

-We had a great time on our field trip watching, “The Velveteen Rabbit” and making Japanese Star Streamers.

-Thank you so much for your hard work at home for the Science Innovation Projects! They turned out amazing and the kids loved showing them to their peers.

-The kids had a good time making their Valentine boxes and passing out their cards to their friends on Thursday.

-Math: We finished up Chapter 7: Money and Time.

-Social Studies: We continued learning about the Civil War. We learned about Abraham Lincoln and how he felt about slavery. We also learned about the division of the United States between the Union and the Confederacy.

-We are in need of masking tape and empty cereal boxes for S.T.E.M. projects. Thanks in advance!

-We will be visiting the Arvada Center on Tuesday, February 11th. Students should wear a red polo with our R.M.A.E. logo and bring a sack lunch.

-Science Innovation Day is Wednesday, February 12th. Please have children bring their simple machine project that day.

Academics:

Math: We will continue learning about money and time. We will review next week on Wednesday and take the chapter test on Thursday.

Literacy: This week we read a nonfiction story about frogs and focused on dipthongs ou/ow. The comprehension skill was compare/contrast.

Grammar/Writing: Comparative Adjectives ending with -er or -est and Cursive

Social Studies: We started learning about the events leading up to the Civil War. We learned about slavery, plantations, abolitionists, Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, and the big differences between the northern and southern states during this time.

Makerspace: The children had a blast making covered wagons out of cardboard, paper, and small pieces of wood!

Academics:

Math: Chapter 7: Money and Time

Literacy: We listened to an expository nonfiction story called, “Life Cycle of a Pumpkin,” focused on the oo/u sound, discussed facts vs. opinion, and how to use context clues to figure out the meaning of a new word.

Grammar/Writing: Adjectives and Opinion Writing about Oreos

Social Studies: We learned about the story of Sequoyah and why he created a written language for the Cherokee tribe, The Trail of Tears, The Oregon Trail, The Pony Express, and the Transcontinental Railroad.

Core Virtues: The children listened to a story called, “Brave as Can Be” and watched another short video about courage. Then we had a class discussion and wrote a sentence about a time they showed courage.

S.T.E.M.: The children built a sled and ramp out of various materials designed to transport the sled the farthest distance.

Week of 1/20/2020

-We will not be having an official Valentine’s Day Party. We will celebrate as a class by passing out valentines to each other on Thursday, February 13th. We are asking for some food donations as well. A sign-up sheet will be coming out in the next couple of weeks. Please send in a shoe box for your child to decorate by Friday, February 7th. If your child chooses to pass out valentines make sure they have one for everyone. Mrs. Scheid has 15 students and Mrs. Grose has 14 students.

-Parent/teacher conferences are coming up next month.

Academics:

Math: We completed Chapter 6: 3 Digit Addition and Subtraction.

Literacy: We read a story called, “The Quilt Story,” learned many new vocabulary words, and focused on words with a consonant + le. The comprehension skills were compare and contrast, characters, and setting.

Grammar/Writing:
We focused on adjectives for grammar and worked on opinion papers about our favorite pets and whether or not we like oreos.

Social Studies: We began our unit about Westward Expansion and reviewed topics from first grade such as the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. We learned about why pioneers were interested in moving west, the steam engine, flat boats, and the Erie Canal.

Core Virtues: Students listened to a story about courage called, “One” by Kathryn Otoshi and had a class discussion in the school library.

S.T.E.M.: Today the second graders learned about how snowflakes are formed. Then they used a variety of materials to build symmetrical snowflakes.


Week of 1/13/2020

-Dress Code Reminders: Jeans and leggings worn as pants are not allowed and children may not wear outdoor jackets in the classroom (only dress code appropriate sweaters and sweatshirts).

Academics:

Math: We will complete Chapter 6: 3-Digit Addition and Subtraction next week and take our chapter test next Friday.

Literacy: We read a biography called, “A Weed is a Flower: The Life of George Washington Carver” and focused on comparative endings (-er and -est). We also read other short stories about inventors and focused on cause and effect as the comprehension skill.

Grammar/Writing: We learned how to use the verbs (am, is, are, were, was). The kids were also introduced to cursive letters.

Science: We continued our unit about simple machines. This week we learned about pulleys, wheel and axles, wedges, inclined planes, and screws. We also did some experiments and learned about friction.

Core Virtues: The students heard a read-aloud called, “Jujo.” Jujo was a boy living in the jungle who had to show courage in order to become a tribesman. The kids also worked on a crossword puzzle with a partner containing words related to courage and other core virtues.

S.T.E.M.: This week the challenge was to build a ramp and a car containing a wheel and axle. They used Kinex, bins, boxes, rulers, and books to build their ramps and cars.

Week of 1/6/2020

In the News:

-Happy New Year and Welcome Back!! Report cards and Middle of the Year Assessment Data was sent home today in Friday Folders.

-We are in need of 28 brown paper grocery bags as soon as possible. They must have handles.

-On Friday Feb. 7th second grade will be having their Pioneer Day Celebration and will be in need of many volunteers. In the coming weeks, you will see details on how you can help! Thanks in advance

-Please send in a shoe box for your child to decorate for Valentine’s Day by Friday, February 7th. We will be having a small celebration as a second grade class. While we are not having an “official party” we will be asking for fun snacks to eat while the children pass out their valentines :)

-Please make sure to fill out the field trip permission slip for our field trip to the Arvada Center.

Academics:

Math: We started Chapter 6: 3 Digit Addition and Subtraction.

Literacy: We read a realistic fiction story called, “Rosa and Blanca.” We focused on the long i sound and theme and plot for comprehension. We also changed up the independent reading menu work to allow children more choice.

Grammar/Writing: We focused on verbs for the past, present, and future. We also began some warm-ups before we introduce cursive.

Science: We completed our unit about life cycles. We learned about the life cycle of a frog, butterfly, and the water cycle. Then we began our next unit about Simple Machines. Students will be required to complete an at-home project related to Simple Machines for Science Innovation Day next month. Stay tuned for more details.

Core Virtues: Children discussed the meaning our core virtue of the month, courage. In small groups, they made large posters with pictures and words related to courage. Furthermore, we heard a read-aloud titled, “Courage.”

S.T.E.M.: The S.T.E.M. activity was related to Simple Machines this week. The challenge was to build a catapult using spoons, rulers, tape, cups, blocks, and pom-poms.

Week of 12/16/2019

In the News:

-THANK YOU for all of the generous gifts!!!!! It has been a great first half of the year and we are looking forward to the second half with your amazing children and all of you! Have a wonderful holiday break!!!

-Thank you to the volunteers at the Holiday party and everyone who donated food/supplies.

-Remember to have your child read over break. Consistency is key! Espark logins were sent home for children to practice math and reading skills on the computer.

Academics:

Math: We completed Chapter 5: 2 Digit Subtraction. We also reviewed missing addends, comparing numbers, and addition with regrouping.

Literacy/Writing: The children wrote silly holiday sentences and completed a “Snowball style” Christmas story. We also reviewed verbs, punctuation marks, and contractions.

Science: The second graders continued learning about life cycles including the life cycle of a tree and the life cycle of a chicken.

Core Virtues/R.A.K.: The kids made holiday cards, gifts, and wrote kind notes to put in their peers’ stockings.

Week of 12/9/2019

In the News:

-The children wrote letters to Santa this week during writing. Their letters are in an addressed envelope in their Friday Folders. Please help your child write their return address, put a stamp on the envelope, and mail their letters to Santa. Thank you!

-Literacy: We read a folktale this week called, “Anansi Goes Fishing.” We focused on compound words, cause and effect, and drawing conclusions.

-Writing: The second graders completed various writing projects this week related to the holiday season.

-Science: We learned about cycles in nature, including daytime and nighttime, the reasons for the seasons, and the life cycle of a plant.

-Core Virtues/R.A.K.: The second graders each made a stocking to hang up and wrote kind notes to each other to put in the stockings.

Random Acts of Kindness: Our R.A.K. lesson was related to gratitude, having a positive attitude and being thankful for the little things in life.

S.T.E.M.: The students were challenged to “Stretch the Snowman”. In this challenge the students needed to create a Snowman as tall as possible. The rule was that the Snowman needed be free-standing and it couldn’t lean or prop up against anything.

Writing: The children wrote about things they are grateful for, Thanksgiving family traditions, and completed a Thanksgiving word scramble.

Social Studies: We reviewed what we learned about The Revolutionary War, The Boston Tea Party, and Westward Expansion from first grade. We also started to learn about the events leading up to The War of 1812 and facts about different leaders from that time.

-Core Virtues: Both second grade classes got together to discuss the meaning of gratitude, listen to The Giving Tree, and discuss how the tree showed gratitude for the boy. Then the children completed a Gratitude Journal.

-S.T.E.M: This week the kids helped a turkey to escape from a maze and get to the stage so he could perform in a play. The task included them to build a marble maze to help the turkey (marble) to get from the beginning to the end of the maze.

-Literacy: We heard a fairy tale that was turned into a poem called, “The Bremen Town Musicians.” We focused on plurals that change their spelling, author’s purpose, and story structure.

-Writing: The children have been working on a silly persuasive writing project about why someone should eat hot dogs instead of turkey on Thanksgiving. The story is written from the point of view of a turkey.

-Social Studies: We completed our unit about Ancient Greece. We learned about many famous philosophers including Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates. We also learned about Alexander the Great.

-S.T.E.M.: The challenge this week was to work in teams to build a perch for Harry so he could see around the classroom easily. The kids had to be problem-solvers to find a way for Harry to be the highest without putting his safety at risk!

eSpark: This week the second graders logged onto an educational website called eSpark for the first time. Each child took a pretest for math and reading to determine their current abilities. Espark contains games, videos, and assessments that are specific to each child’s needs.

Academics:

-Math: We finished Chapter 3: Basic Facts and Relationships and took the assessment. The kids also played math games and reviewed skip counting.

-Literacy: We reviewed skills such as r-controlled vowels, spelling rules for plural and singular nouns, facts vs. opinions, and more.

-Writing: The second graders finished their Fire Safety stories and wrote Halloween themed stories.

-Random Acts of Kindness (RAK): Our theme this week was teamwork. The two classes got together to discuss what teamwork is and listen to a story about some frogs who worked as a team. Then the classes split up for an activity. Each class was split into 2 teams. The goal was to cross the pond (the classroom) without letting go of a teammate and without stepping into the water (the carpet). They had a blast as they used paper plates as stepping stones to cross over to the other side of the pond!

S.T.E.M.: There was no S.T.E.M. project due to the short week for students.


Week of 10-21-19


In the News:


-Report Cards were sent home in Friday Folders today.

- Scholastic Book orders will be going home in Monday’s homework folder. Due date will be Nov. 21st.

-Children will have math homework on Monday and should study for their Chapter 3 test on Tuesday night using their review page. We encourage you to make up similar questions with different numbers for your children to practice. There will also be a Reading Log sent home on Monday and due on Thursday. There will be no math homework on Wednesday or Thursday and no spelling test next week.

-Our Fall Party is next Thursday at 9:30 to 11:15. The School Parade begins at 2:30 and will finish in the circle around 2:40.

o All may wear costumes (all day if they choose) that are appropriate in content and coverage

o Students are not to bring their costume accessories. Absolutely no weapon related item will be allowed

o Students may wear a hat only if it is an integral part of their costume
o No makeup or other appearance altering is allowed

o Temporary change in hair color allowed only if it is integral to the costume.

-There is no school on Friday next week due to a Teacher In-Service Day.

Academics:

Math: We continued Chapter 3: Basic Facts and Relationships

Literacy: Our story this week was, “Turtle’s Race with Beaver” (Folk Tale). The skills we focused on were r-controlled vowels (er, ir, ur), sequencing, and cross-curricular connections.

Writing: In recognizing Fire Prevention Month, this week the students started their “If there was a fire at my house I would...” writing project.

Core Knowledge Social Studies: We continued our study of Ancient Greece. The students learned about the Olympic games, differences between the city-states of Sparta and Athens, how Athens got its name and ancient Greek Writing.

Library: We read a Greek myth about Pandora.

S.T.E.M.: The students did a science experiment called “Ghost Rockets.” The children made a prediction about what would happen if they mixed corn starch, water, and alka seltzer in a film canister. They had a blast watching their ghosts fly into the air!

Math: We started Chapter 3: Basic Facts and Relationships

Literacy: Our story this week was, “Ronald Morgan Goes to Bat” (Realistic Fiction). The skills we focused on were contractions, realism and fantasy, prior knowledge, and proper nouns

Writing: In lieu of writing this week, the students took the District assessment called The CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test). Results will be sent home late November.  

Core Knowledge Social Studies: We concluded our study of Ancient China and India and began learning about the Ancient Civilization of Greece. The students had a brief introduction on Wednesday then learned about Mount Olympus on Thursday and Friday.

RAK/Core Virtue: The students listened to the story, “Stellaluna” and discussed how the main character (a bat) showed diligence in the story even though she was different from her brothers and sisters.

S.T.E.M.: The S.T.E.M. project this week was related to the story, “Stellaluna.” The children showed diligence when they experimented with flying a paper bat with different amounts of weight attached. The challenge was to fly your bat the farthest distance.

Literacy: Review week

Writing: The second graders wrote a thank you letter to Evergreen Fire for their presentation/truck visit on Tuesday.

Core Knowledge Social Studies: This week we continued our study of “Early Ancient Civilizations. The students listened to the Chinese folktale, “The Magic Paintbrush”. The students also learned about The Silk Road as well as the Great Wall of China. In addition to our in-class studies of China, the students participated in their first MakerSpace activity with our Tech teacher, Mr. Dunbar. The students had to work in teams to construct a portion of the Great Wall of China out of just cardboard and plastic screws. The kids worked together in groups and had a blast!

Thank you to Mrs. Cipielewski for teaching the children about Ancient Asia last week and showing pictures/items from when her and Shaadhu lived and traveled in Asia!

Week of 9/30-10/4

In the News:

-Field Trip Monday to the Butterfly Pavilion- Please have your child wear their red rmae logo uniform shirt, bring a sack lunch and a disposable water bottle. Let us know if you have any questions :)

Writing: The second graders finished their “How to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich” writing project.

Core Knowledge Social Studies: This week we continued our study of “Early Ancient Civilizations. In India, we learned about Diwali, Buddhists and Buddhism. We also started learning about China, specifically the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers and their form of writing...calligraphy.

Week of 9/23-9/27


Math: We continued Chapter 2: Numbers to 1,000. Students do have math homework (unless they were able to finish in class).

Literacy: We read a play called, “The Strongest One,” focused on Realism and Fantasy for the comprehension skill, and practiced consonant digraphs for the phonics skill.

Grammar: Commands and Exclamations

Writing: The second graders finished writing letters to someone of their choice this week. They began their “How to…” writing project. They have been writing about how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Core Knowledge Social Studies: This week we began our study of “Early Ancient Civilizations. We will be digging into the countries of India and China. The students will learn how these civilizations were both able to form because of mighty rivers, what they farmed, how cities/governments were formed as well as other practices such as writing and religion.

S.T.E.M.: The kids had a blast this week during their S.T.E.M. challenge! They had to make a paper shoe out of newspaper and tape!

Other:
-If you ordered Scholastic Books, the order has been placed and books will be delivered to the school. We will send them home when they come in :)

Week of 9/16-9/19

Math: Chapter 2: Numbers to 1,000. Students do have math homework that was sent home yesterday.

Literacy: We read a nonfiction story called, “A Walk in the Desert,” focused on Main Idea and Details for the comprehension skill, and practiced spelling changes when adding inflected endings (-s, -ing, and -ed).

Grammar: Statements and Questions

Writing: The second graders wrote letters to someone of their choice this week. They wrote about what they have been learning about and doing so far this year in second grade.

Core Knowledge Social Studies: This week we studied “The Americas” including The West Indies, Central America, and South America. The kids watched short educational videos about the different places and labeled countries and landmarks on marks of the regions.

S.T.E.M.: The kids had a blast last week during their S.T.E.M. challenge! They worked in groups of 2 to save Fred. Fred was a gummy worm who fell out of his boat! Their challenge was to get Fred back into his life preserver (a peach gummy ring) by only using a paperclip.

Week of 9/9/19- 9/13/19

Math: We completed Chapter 1: Number Concepts and took our assessment.

Literacy: We read “Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night” and reviewed how to read consonant blends in words. We also learned about synonyms, character and setting, and reviewed long vowel sounds. Children also completed their first “Fresh Read.” “Fresh Reads” are short stories that students read while being timed for a minute. After they finish reading the story, they answer questions about the story. The goal of “Fresh Reads” is to improve fluency and comprehension. We encourage you to have your child practice reading the same stories at home with you. Challenge them to improve their WPM (words per minute) while still reading with accuracy, inflection, and a proper pace.

Grammar/Writing:
The second graders learned about predicates and practiced identifying them in sentences. They also finished editing their space stories and wrote their final drafts.

Core Knowledge Social Studies: We continued to learn about geography. We finished our “All About Maps” books, practiced using Atlases to look up information with partners, reviewed landforms taught in first grade and learned about new ones.

Core Virtues/RAK: This week we visited the school library for the first time. While we were there we read a book called, “Interrupting Chicken.” We discussed that that interrupting is not showing respect to others. While we were in the library, we also discussed library expectations and had a chance to look around.

Other:

-There is no school for children next Friday, September 20th due to a Teacher In-Service Day.

Week of 9/3/19- 9/6/19

Math: This week we continued Chapter 1: Number Concepts and focused on expanded form, different ways to write numbers and different names for numbers.

Literacy: We read a nonfiction piece called, “Exploring Space,” reviewed long vowel sounds and syllable patterns, and discussed the main idea and details as our comprehension strategy for the week.

Grammar/Writing: In grammar we learned about what the subject of a sentence is. During our writing block, we introduced the writing process, starting with a “Bubble Map” to organize our ideas. The topic was “If I were an astronaut, what would I bring into space with me?” After creating a bubble map of our ideas we started writing a rough draft.

Core Knowledge Social Studies:
Maps and Globes-The second graders learned that maps and globes are convenient ways to show location and some of the human and physical characteristics of our planet. We reviewed our continents, oceans, map keys and compass rose.

Core Virtues/R.A.K.: The students participated in a “Ripples of Kindness” activity. They learned basic ways to show kindness and respect in the classroom and learning environment. The students listened to the story “​Each Kindness”​ by Jacqueline Woodson. It was about a girl’s choices and how they impacted another girl in her class. As they listened, they were asked to pay careful attention to the choices that were made and to the acts of kindness and respect (or disrespect). We then talked about how the choices the girls made impacted the new student. The extension activity was called the “Kindness Pond.” Each student took a small stone and shared something kind they had done that day or recently. Then they dropped the stone in the water to demonstrate the ripple effect of their kind act.

-RMAE will be having a Spelling Bee Thursday Oct. 10th. A list of words is in your child’s Friday Folder. We will be having a pretest using the ten highlighted words on Monday. The top spellers from each grade will participate in the Spelling Bee.



Week of 8/26- 8/30

Math: This week we started Chapter 1: Number Concepts and focused on even/odd numbers and place value.

Literacy: We read a realistic story called, “Iris and Walter,” reviewed short vowel sounds and syllable patterns, and discussed main idea and details as our comprehension strategy for the week.

Grammar/Writing: We reviewed how to write a correct sentence, reflected and wrote about the upcoming school year, and wrote and designed a pennant about ourselves.

Core Knowledge: The second graders learned the story components of tall tales (fiction folktale, exaggerations, larger than life characters, amazing childhoods, many took place on the Frontier) and listened to several famous examples.

Core Virtues/R.A.K.: We listened to the story “Enemy Pie.” We also used 2 apples to represent what happens to people when they are bullied. The children took turns saying kind words to one apple and means words to a different apple. When we cut open the apples, the children saw that one apple was bruised from the mean comments and one apple was not bruised on the inside. The apples served as a visual and reminder that more and more hurt and damage happens if nobody does anything to stop bullying.

S.T.E.M.: The children had a blast working in small groups using apples and other materials to build an Apple Annihilator! The goal was to build a “wrecking ball” that could knock over some markers .

Other:

-Back to School Night is on Wednesday, September 4th. We hope to see you all there!

Week of 8/19 - 8/23

What a great first week! I feel very special to have each and every one of your kids in my class! They are an amazing group of kids and it makes this year really exciting for me.

This week we got to know each other as well as learn and practice our classroom expectations. We took the beginning of the year writing sample, Dibels Reading Assessment, NWEA MAP math, and the beginning of the year Go Math assessment. In addition to this, we discussed, our Core Virtues (Respect and Responsibility) and how to be a good friend, played some team building games, played math games, and read a few fairy tales from Core Knowledge. test results will be used for differentiation grouping in the classroom and shared during October Parent/Teacher conferences. Friday Folders will be sent home today and every Friday. Please empty out all of the papers and return the folder on Mondays.
